Can I re-use the disposable capsules if I clean them?
Unfortunately, no. Nima spent a lot of time on the testing process, and over time, we found that the best way to make Nima reliable and easy to use was to make the capsules single-use only (even if the test comes back as clear of the contaminant).
The disposable test capsules for Nima are essentially tiny chemistry labs that fit into the palm of your hand. Each contains a little bit of our proprietary testing solution, which helps to "recharge" the chemical component of the Nima sensor for each test and is used up once a test has been completed.
Nima is also super-sensitive to the proteins it's detecting, and it's essentially impossible to get a capsule clean after is has been contaminated. This means they are not washable. Capsules should be thrown away after use.
Why do I have to use a fresh capsule every time?
Each capsule is essentially a tiny chemistry lab that fits in the palm of your hand, and contains a small amount of our testing solution, grinding elements, a test strip, and other elements that help Nima find gluten in samples of food. When a test is performed, these elements are used-up and need to be replaced for Nima to perform another test.
Nima is extremely sensitive to gluten, so even Nima’s chemistry team's best efforts at re-using capsules after cleaning them through traditional methods (soap, water, scrubbing) weren't able to fully remove gluten residue from previous tests in a large enough amount to make the capsule re-usable without errors. By using a fresh capsule every time, you'll know exactly what it is you're testing, and cross-contamination between samples (as well as incorrect or inconclusive test results) becomes a non-issue.
How do I dispose of the capsules?
Used test capsules are not reusable or recyclable at this time, and will need to be disposed of in the bin.
